Houston: Five-time world champions Brazil booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Japan, with Gabriel Martinelli scoring a decisive injury-time goal in a thrilling knockout encounter at Houston Stadium.
Brazil had to come from behind after Japan stunned the South American giants with a first-half opener. However, resilience, patience, and late attacking pressure helped the Seleção secure a hard-fought victory and keep their World Cup campaign alive.
With the win, Brazil advance to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the knockout clash between Ivory Coast and Norway on July 5 in New Jersey.
Japan Take Early Control
Japan, renowned for their disciplined defending and organized approach, made a bright start and stunned Brazil in the 29th minute.
Midfielder Kaishu Sano capitalized on a gap in Brazil’s defence, advancing from the left flank before unleashing a powerful right-footed strike past the goalkeeper to give Japan a 1-0 lead.
The goal energized the Japanese side, who continued to frustrate Brazil with their compact defensive structure and tactical discipline throughout the remainder of the first half.
Casemiro Restores Parity
Brazil emerged from the break with greater urgency and found the equalizer in the 56th minute.
Veteran midfielder Casemiro rose highest to meet a delivery from defender Gabriel Magalhães, directing a powerful header into the net to level the score at 1-1.
Moments later, Brazil nearly completed the turnaround when star forward Vinícius Júnior broke into the penalty area and unleashed a fierce effort. However, Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced an excellent save to keep the scores level.
The Brazilian attack continued to press forward, sensing an opportunity to seize control of the contest.
Martinelli Delivers at the Death
As the match appeared destined for extra time, Brazil found their breakthrough deep into injury time.
Midfielder Bruno Guimarães delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, where Martinelli reacted quickly, controlled possession, and calmly finished past Suzuki to spark celebrations among Brazilian players and supporters.
The goal sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory and ensured Brazil’s progression to the next round.
The strike marked Martinelli’s fifth international goal for Brazil and his third goal scored on American soil.
Ancelotti Praises Team’s Patience
Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti praised his players for maintaining composure despite trailing for much of the match.
“We had plenty of options both on the field and on the bench. The important thing was that we did not lose patience,” Ancelotti said after the game.
“Japan are not an easy opponent. They play with tremendous organization and commitment. We trusted our structure and continued to believe that our chance would come.”

The Italian manager also revealed that he had planned to introduce Neymar later in the match if the game had extended into extra time.
“Our team is playing well, and I do not want to change its balance unnecessarily,” he added.
Martinelli Relishes Special Moment
The match-winner described the goal as one of the most memorable moments of his international career.
“It is difficult to put this victory into words,” Martinelli said.
“I saw my family and our supporters celebrating, and it was an incredible feeling. Earlier in the match, I had an effort that hit the post, and I felt another opportunity would come.”
“I’m happy I was able to score and help Brazil win. Whether I play on the wing or through the middle, the most important thing is helping the team.”
Casemiro Highlights Team Spirit
Casemiro credited Brazil’s mentality and squad depth for the comeback victory.
“Our biggest strength is our mindset,” he said.
“In a World Cup, every player matters, including those who come off the bench. The substitutes made a huge impact today, and that collective spirit is what gives us confidence.”
He added that Brazil possess the quality, determination, and depth required to challenge for the World Cup title.
Moriyasu Proud Despite Exit
Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu expressed disappointment after seeing his side eliminated but praised his players for their effort.
“I am deeply disappointed to leave the World Cup at this stage,” Moriyasu said.
“However, I am proud of the commitment and intensity shown by our players. They gave everything on the pitch against one of the strongest teams in the tournament.”
“Even though this defeat hurts, we will learn from it and come back stronger in the future.”
Brazil March On
Brazil’s victory underlined both their attacking quality and mental resilience. While Japan pushed the South American giants to the limit, the experience and depth of the Brazilian squad ultimately proved decisive.
With momentum on their side and a place in the Round of 16 secured, Brazil remain firmly in contention as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title.
